EXT. DAY. FREEWAY ON RAMP. RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC.
(We see cars backed up on the on ramp. The
CD skips to CINDY LAUPER’S “Nobody walks in LA.” We rise into
a panoramic view. We see miles and miles of traffic in both directions. The
Brothers are forced to stop. The POLICE pull in behind them and jump out of
their cars with their weapons drawn. )
OFFICER RICHARDS
Drop your weapons, Kermit and step out of the
car...
(The MAYORS limousine pulls up and the mayor
rushes out.)
MAYOR
Don’t shoot. You’ll hit my son.
OFFICER RICHARDS
The sharp shooters will be here in a minute
sir. They won’t miss.
MAYOR
I don’t care. Don’t shoot. If this
was some stranger I wouldn’t care. But this is my son. We’ll give
them what they want and when my son is out of danger then you can blast them
into confetti for all I care but not until then. Do you understand me officer?
OFFICER RICHARDS
Yes, Sir. But the book says...
MAYOR
I don’t give a damn about the book. Give
them what they want and get my son back to me in one piece or you’ll be
writing parking tickets in South Central.
OFFICER RICHARDS
Yes sir. But we don’t know what they want
sir.
MAYOR
Well, find out.
OFFICER RICHARDS
Yes sir.
(OFFICER RICHARDS goes off screen. The MAYORS
ASSISTANT enters)
MAYORS ASSISTANT
Sir. Do you think this is a good idea?
MAYOR
Absolutely. If I play this right I’ll
get my son back, show the police force isn’t just a bunch of goons, and
I’ll get re-elected for sure. The best publicity is free. Remember that.
MAYORS ASSISTANT
Yes sir.
(The POLICE sirens cause the cars in front
to pull aside. HENSON takes off.)
OFFICER RICHARDS
Damn it.
