Scene 1 page 1 - Venice Beach
EXT. DAY. PACIFIC OCEAN OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. (modern
day.)
(CAMERA MOVES as though a seagull
flying. We see its shadow rippling over the waves. The sun shines
a beautiful day. We fly in land over VENICE BEACH California. The
boulevard swarms with freaks and the beautiful people; rollerbladers,
surfers, police, hustlers, yuppies, gang bangers, bikers, bikini bombshells,
muscle beach studs, jugglers, masseuse, tourists, punks, hippies,
vendors, artists, movie people, and an occasional normal person. Down
below the seagull sees JIM and HENSON performing their puppet street
show called EVE and SNAKE. JIM controls EVE and HENSON controls SNAKE.
JIM and HENSON are excellent ventriloquists. When SNAKE and EVE speak
we never see the BROTHERS lips or throat move. It’s mystifying
to see them work. SNAKE has a sort Tom Waites persona, and EVE is
a sort of Billy Holiday black feminist. Though they are puppets they
have distinct personalities separate from JIM and HENSON. Much the
same as JIM and HENSON, though they are fraternal twins of separate
fathers, have distinct and separate personalities. The bird circles.
JIM and HENSON have a small crowd gathered around. One of the crowd
is a GANGBANGER and his girlfriend. He is not amused. The SEAGULL
decides SNAKE might be something good to eat and takes a dive. The
SEAGULL grips SNAKE in its webbed feet. SNAKE and the SEAGULL fight.)
SNAKE
Let go! Let go! Help me! Help me! (Singing) Help me Rhonda, Help help
me Rhonda.
(The bird gives up and flies away. The crowd thinks this feathered
attack funny.)
EVE
That’s what yo’ get for callin’ me a ho, Snake.
SNAKE
That’s all you can say? I nearly got my head ripped off, and
that’s all you can say?
EVE
Mmhuh.
GANG BANGER
I’ll say somethin’. Whadda two white boys doin’
talkin’ black fo’?
SNAKE
Henson here ain’t talkin’ black. Are you?
HENSON
No.
SNAKE
And as for me. I’m Snake. I’m more Tom Waites and Leonard
Cohan than black. But if you think I’m black. I take that as
a compliment, Jack.
